Meet Ed Shackelford

Founder of BlackRidge Structures

BlackRidge Structures begins with a builder who understands more than materials and measurements. Ed Shackelford brings more than 35 years of construction experience, Appalachian roots, and a deep respect for doing things the right way — on time, on budget, and with respect for the homeowner’s property.

His background in construction management, field leadership, and civil engineering training shapes a company built around planning, accountability, craftsmanship, and quiet confidence rather than sales pressure. The result is a more thoughtful kind of backyard structure: one built with character, discipline, and long-term purpose.

Founder Story

A Builder’s Story Rooted in Work, Heritage, and Responsibility

Ed Shackelford founded BlackRidge Structures to bring something better to the Cincinnati backyard building market: structures with real character, real craftsmanship, and real construction standards behind them.

As a U.S. Army veteran and longtime construction professional, Ed spent more than three decades helping deliver major projects across the country. That background shaped how he approaches every project today — with discipline, planning, accountability, and a strong belief that customers deserve honesty and follow-through, not excuses and surprises.

But this company was not built on credentials alone. Ed was raised in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, where practical craftsmanship and Appalachian building traditions left a lasting impression on him early in life. He developed a deep appreciation for structures that were durable, purposeful, and full of character.

That influence still lives at the heart of BlackRidge Structures today. The goal has never been to build ordinary backyard sheds. The goal is to create premium backyard structures that feel like they belong on the property — buildings with warmth, proportion, authenticity, and staying power.

Why Experience Matters

Why Experience Matters When You’re Building on Someone’s Property

Many backyard building companies are built around sales. BlackRidge Structures was built around construction.

Ed’s background includes training in construction management, civil engineering study, and decades of hands-on field experience managing real projects, real schedules, and real standards of quality. That matters because a well-built structure is about much more than appearance. It requires planning, sequencing, material judgment, site awareness, and the ability to solve problems correctly before they become costly mistakes.

For the homeowner, that means your project is guided by someone who understands how buildings go together, how jobs should be managed, and how details affect long-term performance.

What This Means for Your Project

What Ed’s Background Means for Your Project

Customers are not hiring a founder because of a résumé. They are hiring because that experience changes the quality of the process and the quality of the finished structure.

Better Planning

Every successful build starts before the first board is cut. Sizing, placement, style, and build details are thought through carefully from the start.

Clear Communication

Homeowners want to know what is happening, when it is happening, and what to expect. A professionally managed job feels different.

Respect for the Property

A premium backyard structure should enhance the home, not create unnecessary disruption. Professionalism and care matter.

More Lasting Craftsmanship

Strong construction choices support better performance, durability, and long-term value.

Appalachian Influence

Why Appalachian Heritage Still Shapes the Company Today

BlackRidge Structures is deeply inspired by Appalachian culture and building traditions — not in a theatrical way, but in a meaningful one.

Traditional Appalachian structures were practical, durable, and built with purpose. They were made to last, made to serve, and made to feel at home in the landscape around them. That philosophy continues to influence the company’s design approach today.

You can see it in the rooflines, the proportions, the porch details, the natural materials, and the focus on character over trend-chasing. The result is a structure that feels more grounded, more timeless, and more connected to the home it serves.

A Word From Ed
“People are not just buying a shed. They are trusting us with their home, their property, and their hard-earned money. I believe that trust should be earned through honesty, craftsmanship, and a finished product that feels right the moment you see it.”
